This public debate is part of an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded research network on the The Concepts of Health, Illness and Disease. The project is managed by Dr Havi Carel (University of West England) and Dr Rachel Cooper (Lancaster). The Myth of Mental Illness?

Philosophy, Psychiatry, Morality and the Mind


 Included in the ticket price is an invitation after the event to drinks and a viewing of The Art of Medicine exhibition at The Art House Gallery, directly across the road from the venue.

A diverse panel of experts debate the nature of mental illness:

  • Does mental illness exist?
  • Diagnosis and treatment vs. Freedom and responsibility
  • Social construction of mental conditions
  • To what extent can one have control over mental illness?
  • Morality, autonomy and the mind being separate from the brain
  • Should a mentally ill person be blamed for their actions?

Chair:

Professor James Ladyman - Editor of The British Journal of Philosophy of Science.

Panel: 

Hanna Pickard -  Philosopher of Psychiatry at All Souls' College and an NHS therapist

Rita Carter -  Science Journalist and Broadcaster

Dr Carlos Hoyos - Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

Professor Chris Thompson - Chief Medical Officer of The Priory Group, Professor of Psychiatry and a past Head of University of Southampton Medical School.

 

As part of The Art of Medicine Exhibition, there will be a screening of"Better Days", the Southampton Film Week short film made by young people at Fairbridge, before the debate.
